Animation...station

Is anyone else a little bummed with all the animated movies coming out lately? Everything's just so...bland. It's either some overly-detailed CG animal adventure, or pop-culture, Family Guy parody of popular fairy tales. I mean, isn't animation an art? Where are the animated movies with the jaw-dropping imagery of Fantasia, or the poigniant humanity of Grave of the Fireflies? Of course, the exception to this rule is always Pixar, but even they tend to limit themselves a bit. I guess I just wanna see animation branch out a bit. I love Disney family flicks, and I don't want to see them stop, but I'd love to see animation used in other ways too.

It seems that animation has become more commercialized over the past few years. I mean, they're just putting out movies for the sake of showing off new technology and for the sake of profit. Whatever happened to the art part of it? I mean sure...they may look all pretty and detailed but it all seems so hollow... I miss the days of old, where animation was drawn painstakingly by hand and they actually put thought into what they were putting out there.

The same thing can be said for a lot of cartoons I see running now a days, re-used gags, bland tasteless humor and dull looking animation. The golden age of 90s cartoons has come and gone, hopefully we can put out something better or at least something similar to the quallity I remember growing up when we get careers in this field ya know??
